Frame Construction

If you're shopping in a showroom, be sure to ask the sales person about the frame under the upholstery. If you're shopping online, be sure it's with a company that can answer this basic question - what is the frame made of? Hardwood frames like oak, maple and poplar provide a strong, solid foundation for the furniture. Avoid soft woods like pine or plywood.

When choosing a fabric type for your upholstered furniture, keep in mind that durability is a key consideration. Some materials commonly used include:

* Cotton - A natural fiber, cotton resists wear, fading and piling, but is less resistant to soiling. Blending cotton with other fabrics can address soiling issues.

* Acrylic - Originally developed as imitation wool, this synthetic fabric resists wear, wrinkling, soiling and fading.

* Nylon - One of the most resilient fabrics, nylon is rarely used alone. Most often, it is blended with other fibers, making it one of the strongest upholstery fabrics. It's highly resistant to soiling and fading.

* Olefin - Often used in blends with other fibers, olefin is a perfect choice for furniture that will get heavy use and wear.

* Polyester - Most often blended with other fibers, polyester resists wrinkles.

* Rayon - Developed as a silk alternative, this synthetic is more durable than silk but does wrinkle.

IIf you're furniture shopping in a showroom, carefully inspect the upholstery and repeat your inspection when the furniture is delivered to your home. Look for fabric that is clean, free of rips, tears or stains. Also, if the fabric is patterned, be sure the patterns line up at fabric seams.

House by divine interior design

The bathroom does seem limited for space, however the wall hung basin and toilet work well in keeping the floor clear. I also love the fact there are built-in mirrors opposite each other, which will definitely give a sense of infinity when you look into them. However for me personally the bathroom does lack colour, it would be lovely to see abit of lime in there!

Oh how I love this kitchen! The stainless steel worktops are a wonderful contrast to the original flooring and lovely wooden Tam Tam stools really give it a more personal edge. The lighting is quirky but understated, all round I think this is a simple elegant kitchen that obviously doesn't take the main focus of the house.

I have to say I am unsure about the mirror above. The sizing of it and placing it opposite the lovely original window is perfect, but the style seems abit to harsh for the interior. However the Eames rocker is lovely paired with the floating shelf.

The minute I found this lovely house on the Internet, I had to post it. I really do love Edwardian properties..similar to Victorian houses but the features seem simpler and less 'heavy', also I love large hallways with the wider staircase, which Edwardian homes seem to have.

The main living area doesn't really seem to follow any style but maybe that is what I like about it so much. That and the wonderful mirrored alcoves, they have to be my favourite part of the. I love the fact that they are to the floor, as many alcoves include storage of some kind so the mirrors only go half way. Also I love how there is a tint to the mirrors. Just beautiful.

tec Architecture & Marcel Wanders Studio have designed ultra luxurious villa situated in one of top tourist destinations Palma de Mallorca. This building design aims to redefine the notion of the luxury villa by moving most of the paradigms of luxury towards a more contemporary and forward-looking expression of architecture and technology. Casa Son Vida with the 8,500 square foot luxury residence transgresses the constraints of site and context, redefining luxury architecture as it is typified by the traditional and prolific Mediterranean and Tuscan styles otherwise found on the island. This act of defiance is accomplished by creating an entirely new structure that erupts unexpectedly from the walls of the existing Mediterranean home. The new structure evolves into a bold, curve- ceous shape that completely evades conventional definition. The idea is that the two pieces co-exist as separate entities, meeting abruptly and then quite literally turning away from each other. Their interaction suggests a chance encounter and speaks to the deliberate and bold juxtaposition of the two elements. The new structure could even be likened to a futuristic spacecraft that has quite literally landed on a typical Mallorca villa.
